Houseplant Tour: Fiddle Leaf Fig

Happy Saturday friends!

Today I’m going to be sharing some of my favorite houseplants with you! These are plants that have taken the interior design world by storm! You have definitely seen these trees on HGTV and have probably seen them all over Pinterest as well.

The plant that I’m talking about, is the Fiddle Leaf Fig.

I think these plants have made such a splash because they have a perfect balance of masculine and feminine energy, and make such a great architectural piece in any space. They also add that warmth that any houseplant brings to a room!

I have been on a Fiddle Leaf Fig journey since August of last year, and it has not been easy learning what these figs enjoy!

In August, Zach purchased two Fiddle Leaf Figs, one from Etsy and one from Lowe’s. By December, both of these little trees had lost all of their leaves! We ended up throwing those two bare stems away, and decided that we would try again with these plants closer to springtime!

After doing a TON of research, I think I’ve figured out what these plants need in order to thrive indoors!

We currently have three Fiddle Leaf Figs, Humphrey was the first and arrived with some cold damage, so he is still be nursed back to health.

IMG_3650IMG_3649IMG_4004IMG_4002IMG_4177ACS_0184

One of the major issues with Fiddle Leaf Figs is that they do not like cold temperatures at all. Humphrey arrived in the mail on a 35 degree day here in Kentucky. This caused his leaves to turn brown as you can see above. Most of those leaves fell off, or if the entire leaf wasn’t brown, I cut off the part with cold damage.

The bottom pictures of Humphrey show the new growth since spring has come around. Bright light, consistent watering, and a special fiddle leaf fig food is what has brought him back to life!!

The next fiddle we purchased was Kevin. This was the story that I shared in Fiddle Leaf Fig Madness a couple of months ago! He resides right in front of our living room window!

Most recently I purchased Fiona the Mini Fiddle at Lowe’s here in Lexington.

The main things that I have learned with fiddles are:

Water: Consistent watering. I water all of my fiddles the exact same amount of water, on the same day of the week. For me, this is on Friday mornings.

Light: Bright, indirect light is what these plants are looking for. I think finding a spot in front of a north, or east facing window would be best for these guys!

Fertilizer: Helps the plants to grow during the spring and summer months. Don’t be scared if your fiddle produces lots of new leaves and then seems to stop for a couple of weeks. They usually produce new growth in spurts, and by the end of the growing season you should have around 2 feet of new height on your tree.

Repotting: This is where I think I went wrong with the first two fiddles. These plants like to feel snug in their pots. If you repot them too soon, they can easily get freaked out, and could start to drop their leaves.

These plants are fantastic once you know exactly what they need in order to thrive. If you want to try your hand at being a plant parent to a fiddle I would check out your local Lowe’s, Home Depot, or any of your local greenhouses! These places can give you some additional advice on how to care for these guys.

Let me know if you have a Fiddle Leaf Fig, or if you’re interested in getting one in the comments below!

Houseplant Tour: Pothos, Medinilla, and Monstera

Hey guys!

I’m super excited to share some more of my houseplant tips and tricks with you! Today we’ll be diving into the world of some easier plants that I think would be great for beginners. All of these plants are very easy going and need the same kinds of basic care in order to thrive in your home.

ACS_0173ACS_0174

We’ll start with the Monstera deliciosa, or the Swiss Cheese Plant. These are hardy plants that have become super trendy over the past year.

When the leaves mature, they begin to split until the plant looks like this:

Monstera Deliciosa

Overall these are very easy-going plants. I usually water mine once a week, and fertilize it once a month with a basic liquid plant food.

These plants can tolerate medium light, but do best in an environment with bright, indirect light such as with a north or east facing window! They can also tolerate normal household humidity and are super fast growers. Mine seems to have three new leaves at all times!

The Medinilla magnifica is one of those plants that I had dreamed of owning. They are beautiful houseplants and they produce one of the prettiest flowers that I have ever seen. I knew I had to purchase one when I saw that my favorite online greenhouse, Hirt’s Gardens, had eight in stock.

ACS_0175ACS_0176

When the flowers bloom, the plant looks like this:

Medinilla magnifica

These plants are also pretty laid back! I water mine once a week, and have not yet fertilized it for the year. These plants also need bright, indirect sunlight in the spring and summer months. During the winter, you’ll want to move this guy to a spot that gets direct sunlight!

Pothos are one of my favorite varieties of houseplants. They are probably the easiest plant to care for in my opinion, and they come in a ton of beautiful varieties!

ACS_0168ACS_0169

Silver Pothos or Scindapsus pictus argyraeus

ACS_0170ACS_0171

Marble Queen Pothos or Epipremnum aurem

ACS_0178ACS_0179

Devil’s Ivy or Epipremnum aurem

These plants are super easy to care for as they only need watering once a week, can handle almost any type of light, and can handle dry conditions caused by air conditioning or heating drafts.

One thing to keep in mind with these plants is that the brighter the light, the better the variegation on the leaves! Another cool thing about pothos is that they are clean air plants!

Will all three of these varieties of plants you want to make sure that you have a well draining soil. Overwatering, and root rot are one of the most common causes on death in any houseplant, but I’ve noticed this to be an issue with the Pothos varieties in particular!

These plants can typically be found at your local Lowe’s or Home Depot, but are also very common online! If you’re looking into becoming an indoor gardener, I definitely recommend trying one of these first!

Suiting Up For Summer

Hey guys!

It seems like summer has hit all of a sudden. As the temperature heats up, and the pool at my apartment complex reopens today, I thought I would bring you all along on my quest for the perfect solid black, one-piece bathing suit.

Black bathing suits have always been my preferred type of swimwear, but instead of focusing on two-piece suits, this year I want to find the perfect one-piece.

photo 2photo 1

P.S. Yes, I know that Key Colony is perfection. I dream about this place every single day!

Purchasing swimwear can be daunting, but there are five suits that I’ve found online at Old Navy and Target that I think will be perfect for me. These are suits that I could wear to the pool, but I could also throw on a pair of denim shorts and a button up after a long day at the pool to go grab food with some friends!

#1: Halter Underwire Swimsuit for Women $44.99

P.P.S. I went to Old Navy today and tried on this suit! I think it’s my favorite of all of these and I’ll most definitely purchase it soon!

#2: Women’s Crochet Off The Shoulder One Piece $39.99

My New Beauty Favorites

Hey guys!

Recently I’ve been getting back into researching and learning about new beauty products and I’ve got some favorites to share with you! Some of these products are not new to the market, but they are new to me! Also, most of these are decently affordable!

ACS_0119

Product #1: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Luminous Bronze Light $50.00

ACS_0121ACS_0120ACS_0128

This bronzer is expensive, but worth it! It is pigmented, with a finish similar to the Ambient Lighting Powders from Hourglass. They give a radiant, candle-lit finish to the skin. Also, this formula is so light and airy that it is perfect for all skin types and maturities.

Product #2: Smashbox Spotlight Palette in Pearl $35.00

ACS_0123ACS_0122ACS_0127

These highlighters are perfect for an every day routine as they add a nice sheen to the skin, but they aren’t a blinding, metallic finish upon the first application. They can be built up to be blinding and metallic! This palette was also in collaboration with one of my favorite Youtubers, Casey Holmes! They don’t emphasize texture on the skin and they last all day!

Product #3: FLOWER Beauty Flower Pots Blush in Sweet Pea $9.99

ACS_0125ACS_0124ACS_0126

This is a perfect blush as it is pigmented and lasts all day. Also, this particular shade goes with almost any look!

Product #4: FLOWER Beauty Shimmer and Strobe Highlighting Palette $15.99

ACS_0131ACS_0129ACS_0130ACS_0132ACS_0136

These highlighters have become my go to over the past few weeks. I use the champagne shade the most often, and the golden shade next. These highlighters are so smooth and buttery and go on the skin beautifully. They are metallic and blinding upon the first layer of application, and they stay in place all day!

Product #5: Fresh Sugar Lip Caramel Hydrating Balm $18.00

ACS_0133ACS_0135ACS_0134

I know that you’re probably thinking that I’m crazy for recommending an $18 lip balm. But if you know me, you know that I’ve had a lip balm attached to me at all times since the 6th grade! This is the BEST lip balm I have ever used. It is so thick and hydrating for my lips. I typically use this product at night since it is such a thick formula. Another bonus is that this lip balm smells and tastes just like caramel!

Product #6: Stila Glitter and Glow Liquid Eyeshadows $24.00

ACS_0137ACS_0138

These liquid eyeshadows took the beauty community by storm when they were released. However, I just got to try them recently and they do live up to all of their hype. These are literally liquid glitter and apply beautifully to the eye. Another awesome thing about these is that they dry down pretty quickly, but this gives you time to blend out the edges! I have swatched the colors that I have: (Left to Right) Rose Gold Retro, Kitten Karma, and Smoldering Satin.

Product #7: LA Girl Pro Matte Foundation $8.99

ACS_0139

This foundation is a great option for anyone with oily skin. This has a matte finish, has medium to full coverage, and lasts all day! I definitely recommend it!

ACS_0113

I hope that you all have enjoyed this post, and I hope that you will go out and try some of these products for yourself. In my opinion, there is nothing better than getting a new blush or highlighter!

Houseplant Tour: Prayer Plants and Peperomia

Hey guys!

Once again, we have finally made it to the weekend!

Today I am going to be sharing another portion of my houseplant tour with you all. Today’s plants are definitely the most colorful and exciting of all of the plants that I own!

We’ll start out today with my Peperomia, as they are much easier to explain than Prayer Plants.

ACS_0155

Peperomia obtusifolia

ACS_0154

Peperomia argyreia or Watermelon Peperomia

The great thing about Peperomia is that they are relatively small plants that are also pretty easy to take care of!

Peperomia need medium to bright, indirect light but are pretty forgiving if you don’t have the best light. They are also pretty laid back when it comes to watering. I usually water mine on Friday mornings!

When it comes to fertilizer and humidity these plants are still super laid back. They like a basic plant food between spring and fall, and they can handle normal household humidity!

The most difficult thing that I’ve had to deal with concerning my Peperomia is the lack of light that I got in my room during the winter months. However, this affected all of my houseplants, so I guess it wasn’t the Peperomia being picky!

There are a ton of awesome varieties of these plants, so I would definitely recommend them to someone who is just getting started with indoor gardening!

While Peperomia are easy to care for, Prayer Plants are on the opposite end of the spectrum. These are delicate, but beautiful plants that need a lot of attention on a daily basis.

ACS_0147

Some basic Prayer Plant care tips and information are:

Water Needs: High. These plants like moisture and humidity. I usually water all of these twice  week. Also, they need to be watered with distilled or filtered water as fluoride can be harmful to their leaves.

Light Needs: These plants prefer low to medium light. If they get more light than this, their leaves could burn. A super cool thing about these plants is that they take in light from the day, and conserve it at night by moving their leaves depending on whether it is day or night!

Fertilizer: They need to be fertilized from early spring to late autumn.

Humidity: These plants LOVE their humidity. I usually spray these with distilled water two or three times a day. If there isn’t enough humidity the leaves on these will start to turn brown on the edges as you will see below on my Calathea ‘Fusion White’.

ACS_0149

Calathea ‘Freddie’

ACS_0150

Calathea lancifolia

ACS_0151

Calathea ‘Fusion White’

ACS_0152

Stromanthe Triostar

ACS_0153

Calathea veitchiana

These plants are the most colorful, and the most exciting plants that I own. There is something so magical about the intricacies of the foliage on each of these!

I hope that you all have enjoyed learning about some of my favorite plants!

P.S. I have another prayer plant on the way, my dream plant, a Calathea orbifolia! I can’t wait to share that one with you all once it arrives!
